Use the Assistant

The Assistant is Tau’s app-wide entrypoint. You can use it as a command bar to find something, as a conversation to ask for help, or as a way to start work in a squad.

Select Assistant in the header, or press ⌘K on macOS or Ctrl K on Windows and Linux. Type the name or purpose of a squad, work stream, or recent consultant conversation. Page and settings results also help you find controls.

Search results only include items your account can access. Ordinary conversation results leave out dormant and terminated agents, and do not list every worker in the workspace. Open a work stream to find its participating conversations.

KeyWhat happens
Enter, before selecting a resultSends your text to the Assistant, or starts a conversation in the selected squad
Down arrowSelects the first result, then moves down
Up arrowMoves up; from the first result, returns to the ask/start button
Enter, with a result selectedOpens that result
EscapeGoes back through the preview stack; closes at the top level
Tab / Shift TabMoves between controls

Arrow selection stops at the ends of the list. The highlighted ask/start button indicates that Enter will send your text rather than open a result. Quick-chat pills below the empty search input send a suggested prompt.

Select a squad to preview its work and recent conversations. The search field stays at the top and filters that squad’s options. Expand Recently completed to choose a 7 days or 30 days window.

Open a work stream to see its conversations and description. Open one of those conversations to read or reply inline. A Started here conversation records where the work originated; if that conversation is no longer active, it opens read-only.

Use the breadcrumb’s Back control or Escape to unwind one level. Tau stores the preview path in the page URL so a refresh can reopen the same nested view. An Open full conversation control opens the selected agent in its squad’s Chats page.

At the top level, ask a workspace question such as:

What needs my attention, and which work streams are waiting on me?

For a task that belongs to a particular squad, find and open the squad first, then enter the brief in its search field. The start button creates a new consultant conversation in that squad. A consultant can explore an idea with you, research a question, or start a tracked work stream.

Include the outcome, constraints, and how you will judge completion. For example:

In the Documentation squad, draft a release checklist for a small desktop app. Use Solo, keep it under one page, and save it in the squad workspace. Ask before publishing anything.

The workspace Assistant and a squad consultant are different conversations. Use the squad preview when you want the task to begin with that squad’s context. Give the Assistant enough detail when you ask it to coordinate across squads.

Use live voice in the same Assistant conversation

Section titled “Use live voice in the same Assistant conversation”

When Realtime is configured and your account has voice access, you can type and talk in the same saved Assistant conversation. Use Start voice chat in the Assistant header and allow browser microphone access. Return from a nested work or consultant preview to the Assistant’s search/conversation view if the live-voice button is disabled there.

The microphone control mutes or unmutes input. Listening remains visible while Tau listens; the mic pulses when it detects your speech. You can interrupt a response, and the streamed response has a stop control. Ending live voice stops the live audio session; it does not delete the saved Assistant conversation.

Typed messages request text responses. Spoken turns can produce spoken replies, so typing is useful when you want to continue quietly. Browser permissions and a supported secure origin are needed for microphone access; self-hosted remote access should use HTTPS.

Collapse the live Assistant to keep it beside the page, and expand it to return to the transcript. Drag the header of the expanded window, or the available surface of the compact window, to move it. The position control also offers preset locations.

Typing uses the same saved conversation whether or not Realtime is configured. Voice transcriptions are sent to that conversation too; audio reads the completed reply. If voice disconnects, text and background tasks keep working. Use Reconnect to restore audio. A queued execution remains queued until Tau can run it; a network connection closing is not a completed answer. See troubleshooting.

Understand background work and saved history

Section titled “Understand background work and saved history”

The Assistant performs quick lookups with your current permissions. Longer tasks run with a general Assistant worker or a squad consultant. Creating a squad consultant requires the same access as creating one from the squad page; it then works with the normal consultant authority. Independent tasks can run alongside one another. An accepted delegation is not a finished result.

You can continue the live conversation while background work runs. Replies and updates return through the Assistant’s messaging path. A task already started by an agent is separate from the live microphone connection; ending voice is not the way to pause that work. Pause the work stream when you need work to stop.

End live voice before switching Assistant conversations or starting a new one. Use Recent chats in the Assistant conversation or Assistant conversations from search to resume a saved Assistant conversation. Squad consultant conversations appear in their squad preview and Chats page. Failed sends remain in the conversation with a retry control. Older conversations retain their previous transcript under Earlier conversation; new turns use the durable agent history.

Questions appear directly in the Assistant, including questions from its background workers. Fill in the question form and submit it there. Answer in Assistant in the Feed opens the corresponding conversation and task. Failed answers keep your draft so you can retry.

Task reports wake the Assistant even when the panel is closed. Expand Task updates below a summary to read its original reports. Reading, forwarding, and summarizing are separate: use Mark read when you have read a report. The Updates section also lists older reports and pending questions.

You can ask the Assistant to continue, retry, or cancel a particular task. These operations target that task’s current request; cancelling one task does not stop unrelated work on a shared worker and cannot undo an external action already in progress. Stopping speech only stops audio. Use the conversation’s stop control to stop its current execution.
